He began as a medium-pacer and was the serving captain in that match who bowled for India in the Under-19 World Cup in 2002. He began playing first-class cricket for Haryana before moving on to represent Himachal Pradesh.
He has been a regular in the IPL, having played for the Deccan Chargers in 2009 and Kings XI Punjab in 2010. He joined Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011, and his courageous 89 in the 2012 final game made him the unexpected hero. In the first five games, he served as KKR's wicket keeper because Brad Haddin was out of the line up. He made a 145-run partnership with South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis as they began the batting. He participated in 7 games at the 2012 IPL and amassed 213 runs, including 1 half-century during the championship game. He made 6 catches and two stumpings.
